How big is Greenland?
Greenland measures 2,154,786 km² on this map. It is the world’s largest island, and it is still 3.9 times smaller than Brazil. Africa, at about 30.4 million km², holds it about fourteen times.
The island runs from about 60°N to 83°N, which is exactly where Mercator stops being a map of area and starts being a magnifying glass. Drag it south and it deflates. The square kilometres do not.
Greenland on Equal Earth, at its real latitude, without Mercator’s magnifying glass. The Brazil page is the one that drags it south. Open this scene on the full map.
Areas are the shapes drawn on Map Real Size, measured on the sphere. Official land-area tables differ where they include inland water, a different coastline, or a disputed border. Greenland isn’t bigger than Brazil.
