It is the geopolitical argument that somehow never gets a tape measure. Whose country is bigger, China or the United States?
United States: 9,439,564 km². China: 9,371,364 km².
America by a nose. About 68,000 km², which is roughly the size of Lithuania, or two Belgian. In a race between the two most discussed landmasses on Earth, the gap is a rounding error with a flag on it.
Why the argument never dies
Because “bigger” keeps changing definition. Include inland water? Alaska? Taiwan? Disputed borders in the Himalayas? Different yearbooks give different answers by tens of thousands of square kilometres, and people treat that fog as a licence to pick a winner.
On this map the geometries are consistent, the same method for every country, and the USA still edges it. Narrowly. Extremely narrowly. If your identity depends on the result, buy a lottery ticket instead.
What the wall map does to both of them
China sits closer to the equator than the bulk of the United States. Mercator therefore flatters Alaska and the northern Lower 48 more than it flatters Xinjiang. One country gets a northern costume. The other mostly doesn’t. Intuition formed on classroom maps is already crooked before the flag waving starts.

For a sense of how little that 68,000 km² matters in continental terms, remember that Africa can hold both of them and India with millions of square kilometres left over. The real story was never which superpower won the photo finish. It was how small the finish looks next to the board.
