Canada’s brand is politeness, cold and being “up there”. America’s brand is being the main character. Somewhere in that casting decision, people forgot to check which country has more land.
Canada: 9,872,248 km². United States: 9,439,564 km².
Canada wins by about 430,000 km², roughly the size of Iraq, or one California plus a bit. It also beats China (9,371,364 km²). Second largest country on Earth after Russia. Not a hat. A continent-scale roommate.
So why does it look like a cap?
Because almost the entire country sits inside Mercator’s inflation district. From Toronto’s latitude upward the map is stretching everything, and the Arctic archipelago gets the full theatrical treatment. Canada on a classroom map is a drama. Canada on an equal-area map is still enormous, just less cosplay.
Population doesn’t help the reputation. About 40 million people in a country the size of a superpower means the land doesn’t argue back on television. Empty square kilometres are bad at PR.
Take the hat off
Open Canada vs USA. Canada has been dragged down over the Lower 48, closer to a latitude where the projection stops lying quite so hard, and the polite neighbour suddenly looks like the bigger silhouette. Because it is.
Then switch to Equal Earth or the globe. Same ranking, less costume jewellery. Canada edges America. America edges China. All three would vanish inside Africa with room for a fourth. Hierarchy is relative. The hat was never the story.
